What kind of yoga do you teach?
I teach Hatha Yoga in the Iyengar tradition. Iyengar yoga follows the principles of form and alignment taught by B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India. It is based on the ancient teachings of the Indian sage, Patanjali. This form of yoga emphasizes precise body alignment and the use of props to help you safely develop strength, balance, stamina, and flexibility. Click here to learn more about Iyengar Yoga.

What is Iyengar Yoga?
According to Lois Steinberg, Director of the B.K.S. Iyengar Institute of Champaign-Urbana, "Iyengar yoga is based on the teachings of living yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar, and the author of the classic Light on Yoga. Iyengar's teachings are deeply grounded in the ancient yoga tradition. His intense practice and over 65 years of teaching have produced significant innovations. Among the most noteworthy of these are
- emphasis on standing poses to develop strength, stability, stamina, concentration, and body alignment
- use of props to facilitate learning and adjust poses for stiff people, and
- how to use yoga to ease various ailments and stress."

Can I start yoga if I'm stiff, overweight, out of shape, pregnant or elderly?
People of all ages and levels of physical ability benefit from yoga practice. Yoga teaches you how to listen to your body and to respect both its abilities and its limitations. The correct use of props and knowledge of alignment minimizes potential problems that might arise in a yoga practice. Tell the instructor if you have a condition like detached retinas, high blood pressure, knee, back, hip, wrist, or shoulder problems. The instructor needs to know about anything for which you receive medical treatment. Also, inform the instructor if you have ever had major surgery, cancer, or other serious illness. Modifications to the poses can be given. Also inform the instructor if you are pregnant or menstruating as many poses are not suitable to do at that time. Please check with your doctor prior to beginning yoga if you have a medical condition or physical limitations.

How does yoga work?
Hatha yoga poses (asanas) affect the body and mind in a variety of ways. Some poses are soothing, some are stimulating. The basic standing postures that beginners are taught will build up strength and stamina, and improve muscular tone, flexibility and alignment. Practicing a well-rounded sequence of poses reduces tiredness and soothes the nerves. It also trains and disciplines the mind so concentration is improved. Yoga helps you breathe more freely and increases the flow of energy in the body. Yoga is therefore a great help if you suffer
from stress, anxiety or insomnia!

What Level of Class is Right for Me?
THE 8 WEEK BEGINNER SERIES introduces the student to the basic standing poses, seated poses, and twists. Iyengar yoga is perfect for a beginner because it emphasizes a step by step approach to teaching the fundamentals of alignment and breath. Beginner classes range in size between 8-15 people. Students receive individual attention and corrections. You may take the 8 week series indefinitely. No previous yoga experience is required.
For the Intermediate Class, at least 6 months of previous Iyengar Yoga experience required. You must have the instructor's permission to take the Intermediate Class.
AS YOU CONTINUE IN YOUR YOGA PRACTICE we will build on the basic principles of Iyengar Yoga by teaching more standing poses, basic backbends, forward bends, twists, and inverted postures. Attention is given to improving overall strength and flexibility and preparing students for more advanced postures.
Intermediate and advanced level classes are available on an individual or small group basis (2-4 people).

What should I wear/bring to class?
For yoga classes, most people wear shorts and a t-shirt. It is best to wear clothing where the instructor can see your ankles and knees clearly. This helps her give you important feedback about bodily alignment.

Do I need to buy any props to attend classes at the Yoga Place?
I have a limited number of props available for use at each class. So, no you do not "need" to purchase any props. However, it is a good idea to bring your own yoga mat from the very beginning. These are available locally at numerous locations ranging from grocery stores to sporting good stores. Most students who decide to continue with yoga study purchase a full set of props which includes two blocks, a belt, three or four mexican blankets, an
eye pillow and a bolster. Purchasing your own set of props helps you establish a home practice and also frees up the class props for other new students who have not purchased props yet. I have props available for purchase at very reasonable prices. Many local vendors sell belts and blocks. Many online vendors sell bolsters and blankets.
